Karako - Chinese Baby in Pajamas

dimensions:

 1" high x 1" wide x 1 5/8" long

Collected in Japan

  circa 1935

Late 18th / early 19th century elephant Ivory Netsuke depicting a crawling karako, or Chinese baby, in pajamas with a frilled ruff.  Figure is in a prone pose, with arms and legs tucked into a classic netsuke form.  Mouth is wide open.  The figure has a mystical quality, looking a bit old for a "real" baby, and similar in style to "foreigner" netsuke from the same period.
