19th century stained ivory netsuke depicting a procession of humanoid foxes traveling through a forest.  Figures most likely represent Kitsune (mythological beings capable of transforming into human form) or Tanuki (racoon dogs or badgers) accredited with similar powers. Six figures escort a seated figure carried by two figures with staves.  The procession is led by two tough looking fellows carrying lanterns, followed by another carrying a large bundle topped by rolled textiles.  A fox beating a drum follows up from behind.  The group winds its way through a grove of overhanging trees, with a small shrine and another larger shrine or temple structure on a rock outcropping in the background. The subject may be a wedding party, with the bride riding in the center. A superbly carved complex scene!

Excellent Condition.

Golden yellow patina.

Two ( himotochi ) holes in bottom.

Signed Masayuki also known as Hoshunsai. Mid to late 19th century carver of figures and animals.
