19th century elephant Ivory Netsuke depicting a shrine atop a tall organic column.  Two figures are integrated with the column.  One tall sage-like figure stands holding an open scroll and a round object, possibly a stone or a food offering.  Another smaller, seated figure sits in an alcove on the opposite side holding a similar, larger object with both hands.  Bottom is carved with a linear radiating design, possibly a Lilly pad.  The carving is beautifully done, with flowing lines and nice detail. Shape of original tusk is still evident in the design.

Signed Isshi, 19th century carver and Shibayama style inlay artist

Excellent Condition.  Lovely golden yellow patina. Beautiful ivory grain integrated with design.
