The John Lenk Collection - African Woodcarvings

Three musicians

Collected circa 1975

Three folk art woodcarvings of musicians.  Two drummers and one flute player.

Flute player is African, probably from Kenya.  Elongated body, simplified features, and scaled texture over must of the body.

Good condition with minor wear from age.

dimensions:

approx 3" wide x 4" deep x 15" high

Drummer #1 is from Kenya, from the Besmo people.  Elongated body, simplified features, large head, and small hands and feet. Figure is playing a small drum gripped between the thighs.

Good condition with minor wear from age.

dimensions:

approx 2" wide x 1 3/4" deep x 13 1/2" high

Fair condition, missing one arm.  Some cracking along right side of head.

dimensions:

approx 3" wide x 4" deep x 12" high

Drummer #2 is rendered more realistically than the other two figures. The style is influenced by African carving, but he is probably Haitian in origin. Figure is playing a tall drum in a standing position.
