Seth Gonzales

Furniture maker Seth Gonzales creates innovative, finely crafted furniture reminiscent of Danish Modern, Craftsman, or Shaker style.  His works combine elegant lines, simple forms, and superb joinery.

Gonzales is largely self-taught, building his skills from his early experience working for his father as an apprentice carpenter and cabinet maker.  As his desire to make unique furnishing grew, he struggled with technique and design. As his skills have matured his furniture has become more introspective and improvisational, an extension of his ideals of workmanship, beauty and usefulness.

The artist states;  “My furniture making is simply a thoughtful and honest composition of spare design and unsparing craftsmanship. My vision and my product is counter-synthetic and own-able fine woodwork.”

“My materials are responsibly sourced from a select group of mills and suppliers that live by good-sense forestry and offer quality lumber. My favorite wood species are beech, red alder, claro walnut, and sugar pine.  I find these species philosophically pleasing and responsive to my style of design.

“In my shop finish is an ingredient in the furniture. I practice finishing as a process of conditioning and fortifying wood, celebrating its lovely anti-plastic durability and color.  This is furniture that you will run your hand over every time you walk by,  year after year.”
